Online job interview has grown in popularity in recent years, and many organizations use technology to conduct preliminary interviews regularly. Job interviews for almost every stage of the employment process became the standard during the pandemic.

USE YOUR COMPUTER TO PERFORM A TEST-RUN
Technology can be overwhelming in today’s world, and online interviews, in particular, require you to feel at ease using whichever method your prospective employee prefers when doing online interviews (Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, FaceTime, etc.). It’s a good idea to test your internet connection as well as your audio and sound capabilities once you’re comfortable with the program you’ll be using to ensure everything works properly.
SKIP THE VIRTUAL BACKGROUNDS
Choosing a cute background for your interview might be tempting. Backgrounds can be distracting and inappropriate for a first-time meeting. You should select the most professional spot in your home or you could also choose a minimal and professional background perfect for the interview.
CHOOSE THE PERFECT LIGHTING SPOT
Make sure your place is not too dark, avoid using overhead lights during the interview. If possible, try to sit near a window with your face towards natural light.

– If you can sit near a window, turn off any overhead lights because they will add a yellow or blue tint to the room.
– Light shining on your face will highlight your eyes and facial features.
– Strange shadows on your face and a frizz halo in your hair will result from lighting from above or behind you.
– Both you and the interviewer will have a difficult time seeing each other if the lighting is coming from behind or to the side.
Turn off any devices that can distract your conversation, such as your phone and computer’s email notifications. Interrupting an interview is impolite, unless you have an emergency that your potential employer is already aware of.
LOG ON EARLY AND TEST SETUP
Being on time requires being 10 minutes early. If it’s your first time doing a virtual interview, you should make sure you’re prepared 15-20 minutes early. In this situation, setting up the computer and logging in is important for your preparation. After you’ve double-checked that everything is ready, you can relax until around 5-10 minutes before the scheduled time of your interview.
SIT UP AND APPEAR PROFESSIONALLY DRESSED
Dress for success and sit up straight, even though you won’t be meeting the interviewer in person. Your look may make or break your first impression. Don’t forget to smile. Sitting up and smiling will not only make you appear more professional and engaged, but they will also make you feel more energetic. Good posture improves your mood, shows openness, and makes you feel more confident.
If you’re nervous practice your main talking points and remember to calm down, it’s easy to talk over people on internet calls. Since the screen will lessen some of the impacts you would have in person, you may need to be slightly louder and more emphatic than you would be in person.
Even though this interview will take place online, don’t forget to practice your traditional interview skills. If they ask for specifics, you should have responses to some common interview questions and prepare examples.
Devices can have speakers that aren’t extremely loud. To get clearer sound, consider connecting your laptop to external speakers or even headphones. If you have any gaming or podcasting microphones, using one during the call could greatly improve your voice quality.
KEEP EYE CONTACT WITH THE INTERVIEWER
Instead of glancing at the person on the screen, keep your gaze fixed on the camera. When you see a person on the screen, it can be difficult to look at the camera. However, since most screens are usually below cameras, staring at the screen will make you appear to be staring down.
USE ENGAGED BODY LANGUAGE
Using engaged body language during the interview, similar to the power poses, will help you answer with confidence and energy. Even if it’s only a phone call, the perfect posture will make you sound more open, friendly, and confident.
DON’T RELY ON NOTES
While you may take a few notes during the interview, you should not make a list of things you want to say. Taking too many notes will make the interview appear awkward and forced.
Don’t feel compelled to respond quickly. Before answering the questions, take a moment to catch your breath. Not only will the little pause offer you a chance to gather your thoughts, but it will also prevent you from interrupting the interviewer.
BEFOREHAND, WRITE DOWN 5 QUESTIONS
Prepare by doing some background research about the company and industry. Try to come up with five good questions that aren’t related to salary and benefits.
You should come up with five questions in case any of them come to you naturally. Most interviewers will ask if you have any questions at the end, and having two or three questions prepared will indicate that you’ve given this some thought.
MAKE A CONNECTION
Make a personal connection with your interviewer over interests, hobbies, or simply the weather to begin creating and building that professional relationship.

FOLLOW UP AFTERWARD
Demonstrating your enthusiasm and commitment can go a long way toward persuading a hiring manager that you are the best candidate for the job.
Before the interview is over, inquire as to when you can expect a response. If they don’t respond by the given date, wait another day or two before contacting them.
Always send a brief gratitude note a few days after the interview. Reiterate your interest in the role and how much you valued their time.
